This time the scanned part is construction reinforcement. Reinforcement seems to be a very simple object, but to achieve the required strength of building structures, a number of requirements are also imposed on it and the geometry must be observed.

Scanning

Scanned sample.

Scanning is carried out by longitudinal movement of the laser triangulation scanner along the reinforcement.

The resulting point cloud is colored by height.

Conclusion

The matte surface of the reinforcement is easily scanned, as it scatters incident radiation well.

An important point is that the side part of the rib can reflect laser radiation to the side and reduce the intensity or even block the reflected radiation. As a result, holes can form in the point cloud.

This problem can be solved by installing the scanner at a slight angle, or by using several scanners rotated 180 degrees. Binocular scanners can also be used.
